Measures against the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

The Australian Government has continued their Seasonal Measures to reduce the risk of the pest Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs (BMSB) entering our country. See

These new measures apply to a vast range of products imported from numerous countries.

All our products including Oak Barrels, Casks and Oak Adjuncts are affected by these measures which have been introduced to protect our Australian Agricultural Industry and for the benefit of our future, and generations to follow.

This is an industry-wide issue and originally reported by WISA in their article “Delays at the border causing a stink” – 3 September 2018. As a member of WISA we are aware of the issue and have implemented the safest, and best possible solution for oak products destined for the wine industry.

To comply, we must treat our containers prior to export with either:

  • Methyl Bromide, or
  • Sulfuryl Fluoride, or
  • Heat Treatment.

Therefore, the logical, safest and only option for our oak barrels, casks and oak adjuncts is the careful application of heat treatment, rather than chemical treatment.

This process will be completed prior to export from Europe or USA. It is a low level heat treatment – 56°C for 30 minutes. This process has been assessed by the cooperages and results indicate this will not affect the integrity of the barrels.

This will impact on the shipment time to Australia and may add 3 to 4 weeks to the shipment time. As a result of the BMSB measures there will be minimal, additional costs incurred that must be shared across the industry.

We ask that you are patient, as the treatment measures mean that delivery times are slightly extended. You may mitigate any possible delays by placing your orders slightly earlier than usual.
